Scope

In addition to determining the amount of wear occurring with an implant and the morphology of the wear particles, in order to predict the long-term success or failure of an implant, it also is necessary to quantify the relative bio-reactivity of the wear particles, particularly their tendency to induce osteolysis.

Research

The researchers of the Cellular Reaction Laboratory, in close collaboration with the Particle Isolation and Implant Retrieval Labs, are developing more efficient and reliable methods for performing bioreactivity assays on wear particles generated in laboratory tests and in vivo. Initially, the assays will be performed using in-vitro macrophage cell culture techniques. Eventually, this will be extended to include in vivo assays with animal models.

Staff

The Cell Reaction program is under the supervision of Paul Benya, Ph.D. and includes Fabrizio Billi, Ph.D.
