J. Vernon Luck, Sr., M.D. Orthopaedic Research Center

The J. Vernon Luck, Sr., M.D. Orthopaedic Research Center is one of two research facilities of Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital and is located on the downtown campus. Its mission is to develop a deeper understanding of the biology and biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, and to apply this knowledge to the improvement of orthopaedic materials and implants, and surgical instrumentation and techniques, thereby improving the quality of care to orthopaedic patients world-wide.

Leadership
The Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center consists of the President, Vice-President and Director, operational management, and research teams. Oversight and governance is provided by a Board of Directors and a Scientific Advisory Committee.

History
In 1979, Dr. J. Vernon Luck Sr. and the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation made the landmark decision to create a center where education, research and patient care could merge into a powerful center for excellence in orthopaedic research.

The dream was to create an orthopaedic research center as formidable as the diseases it was designed to cure. One that would facilitate collaboration between the best minds in orthopaedic science, research and clinical practice. Today, the dream is a reality at the Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center. This Center brings together the two largest musculoskeletal research teams in the West — Orthopaedic Hospital and UCLA — to spearhead advances in orthopaedics using the tools of molecular biology, genetics, bioengineering, stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. Following in the tradition begun at Orthopaedic Hospital in 1959 by Dr. J. Vernon Luck, Sr., our new Research Center is home to the largest, most powerful force in the fight against musculoskeletal diseases.
