Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital, the world's leader in pediatric orthopaedic patient care, research and education, is here for you and your children. For nearly a century we have been the experts in helping children lead healthy, active lives, regardless of a family's ability to pay.
Approximately half of all children will eventually suffer from a fracture. Most commonly, children's fractures are a result of playground falls and sports-related injuries. Children's bones heal fast and should be treated differently than an adult's. Fractures not seen within a few days of the injury will start to heal and can cause problems including deformity, pain and arthritis down the road. Prompt and correct treatment can make the difference between a childhood accident and a debilitating injury with a lifetime of consequences.
Top 5 tips for keeping kids bones safe:
- Use proper adult supervision at home and on the playground
- Use playground equipment with a soft surface surrounding it
- Keep children's bicycles in good working order and obey the rules of the road (helmets, reflectors/lights, hand signals)
- Correctly wear protective gear during activities
- Avoid or use extreme caution during high-risk activities, such as trampoline use at home, riding motorcycles and ATVs
What to do if your child falls or has an accident:
- Check for swelling and/or deformity
- Elevate the injury and apply ice
- Clean deep abrasions with soap and water
- Seek medical attention for fractures if the child cannot walk or stand on an injured extremity, headaches, deep cuts, or if surrounding skin becomes red and warm
Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital serves children by appointment or at our walk-in Urgent Care Center, which is open every day.
