Sports Medicine
The Sports Medicine Service at Orthopaedic Hospital was established over 40 years ago. It specializes in the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries in patients -- from the weekend warrior to the professional athlete. Orthopaedic Hospital's comprehensive Physical Therapy Department specializes in the rehabilitation of patients with sports injuries. The staff is one of the most highly trained in the nation with Doctorate and Masters level degrees as well as National Board Certifications in Orthopaedics, Sports and Manual Therapy.
The goal of the Service is to provide optimum health and return patients to their activities and sports. The highest functional level is achieved through identification, correction and alleviation of prolonged movement dysfunction with the goal to restore proper function, muscle balance, normal joint motion and normal neural mobility to achieve these goals.
Staff
The physical therapists are Doctorate/Masters level trained in advanced therapy techniques. In addition to collecting and evaluating pertinent data for setting patient goals, the therapists identify and set up specific patient treatment plans.
Treatment
Manual techniques are used to improve joint, soft tissue and neural mobility to allow for normal function through muscle balance and normal joint motion. Physical agents are used as an adjunct to help decrease pain, edema and scar tissue formation, and promote healing. Modalities include:
- Ultrasound - Phonophoresis
- Laser - Light Therapy
- H-wave Micro Current
- Traction
- Iontophoresis
- Interferential Therapy
- Electrical Stimulation
- Cryo and Heat Therapy
- TENS Units
- EMS Units
Therapeutic Exercise
Patient-specific exercise programs are designed to ensure muscle balance and proper muscle recruitment. Bike, treadmill or elliptical trainers are available for cardio. Cable free motion, Shuttle, Pilates reformer, and light weights available for strengthening and overall functional endurance. An exercise program is designed for each individual.
Aquatic Therapy (under construction)
Aquatic Therapy is conducted in a gravity reduced environment. This enables patients to work on increasing joint mobility, strength and endurance more aggressively and with a greater sense of success. Pool Therapy with supervised conditioning and strengthening exercises is conducted in a full-sized pool in the Physical Therapy Department.
Patient Education
Patient education is an essential element of the treatment program. The therapist will provide the information needed to prevent, correct or minimize the injury. Additionally, the therapist will customize a Home Exercise Program based on the individual patient needs and requirements.
