Musculoskeletal Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program
The Musculoskeletal Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program at Orthopaedic Hospital, founded in 1962, was the first of its kind in the Western United States, offering a multidisciplinary team approach. The Program provides comprehensive care for children with benign and malignant musculoskeletal and metastatic tumors involving bone and soft tissue. The Musculoskeletal Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program is one of just a few centers in the nation dedicated specifically to musculoskeletal tumors. The tumor team includes surgeons, chemotherapists, pathologists, radiation therapists, electron microscopists, radiologists, social workers and nurse specialists.
As with all rare diseases, a dedicated center improves outcomes and lowers complication rates. Orthopaedic Hospital has documented these improvements. In addition to the clinical program, Orthopaedic Hospital is devoted to ongoing basic science research in bone tumors, microvascular surgery, and prosthetic design.

Musculoskeletal Tumors
Benign Tumors
Benign musculoskeletal tumors vary greatly in their aggressiveness. Some malignant tumors may appear deceptively benign, risking misdiagnosis. The physicians at Orthopaedic Hospital have the experience of caring for over 10,000 patients with benign lesions, and can present optimal treatment plans for patients to assist them in the decision-making process.
Malignant Tumors
Comprehensive treatment not only includes aggressive medical and surgical therapy directed at the tumor, but also extensive family and child support from social workers and therapists. Due to the results of multimodality treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery and, when appropriate, radiation therapy, survival rates have dramatically improved over the last three decades from 8% to greater than 60%. Following surgery, patients undergo extensive Limb Salvage.
Until recently, amputation was virtually the only option for most malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. Today, using the latest specialized surgical techniques and recent advances from ongoing research, the vast majority of patients are candidates for limb salvage surgery instead of an
amputation.

Francis Cyran, M.D.
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr. Cyran is experienced in the diagnosis and management of metastatic and primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas. He completed a musculoskeletal oncology orthopaedic fellowship at the University of California - Los Angeles, and is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at UCLA.
Robert Morris, M.D.
Pediatrician
Dr. Morris, Orthopaedic Hospital Director of Pediatrics, has experience in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Dr. Morris is Board-Certified in Pediatrics and has a Sub-Board Certification in Adolescent Medicine with Special Certifications in Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Life Support. Dr. Morris is a clinic Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA Medical Center.
Roger Kerr, M.D.
Musculoskeletal Radiologist
Dr. Roger Kerr, Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Director of Radiology, is an internationally recognized expert in musculoskeletal radiology and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Dr. Kerr is a Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine.
Sant Chawla, M.D.
Medical Oncologist
Orthopaedic Hospital's Chief of Oncology, Dr. Sant Chawla, trained at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Medical Oncology, and provides care to both our adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Chawla is also the Chief Medical Oncologist at the Cancer Center at Century City Hospital and teaches residents and students at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The UCLA Department of Pediatric Oncology is also available for consultation and treatment of malignancies in children.
