Medical Professional Information

This unique program allows medical professionals to refer children (under 18 years of age) with recent fractures through the Orthopaedic Hospital Special Pediatric Orthopaedic Transfer Program (SPOT).

Children with closed fractures are transferrable from Hospital Emergency Rooms or Urgent Care Centers to the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care for fracture treatment. Fractures may also be referred from medical groups, school nurses and other medical professionals.

TREATMENT

Often, community Emergency Rooms or Urgent Care Centers may stabilize a broken bone (fracture) with a splint. Whether a child has a splint on the fracture, or is in need of initial fracture treatment, the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care can provide cast application or appropriate medical treatment.

After emergent care (casting, closed reduction) of the fracture in the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care, or after surgery (if needed), children with fractures are then seen for follow-up care in the Children's Fracture Clinic. The Children's Fracture Clinic is located across from the Urgent Care Center in the Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center, on the Orthopaedic Medical Center campus, in downtown Los Angeles.

All children with a SINGLE SYSTEM (closed) ORTHOPAEDIC TRAUMA (fractures) are eligible for emergent treatment without prior authorization from the patient's medical group. (Single system means that it must be an orthopaedic bone fracture without other medical complications.)

Children with acute fractures are accepted for treatment without regard for their parents' ability to pay. Financial assistance is dependent upon application for third party reimbursement and Orthopaedic Hospital criteria. Financial assistance is made possible by contributions from the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation.

Orthopaedic coverage in the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care is provided by a team of orthopaedic specialists, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and for limited hours on the weekends.

Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma (fracture) Patients Qualify for Referral if:

The patient is under 18 years of age, and suffers from a SINGLE SYSTEM orthopaedic fracture. (i.e. Patients with vascular problems, etc. are not appropriate for transfer.)
