The Foot and Ankle Clinic at Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center was established to provide a comprehensive referral center for evaluation, second opinion and treatment of children's foot and ankle problems.
Due to the rapid progression in the management of foot and ankle disorders, surgery can often be avoided. However, when surgery is indicated, "leading-edge" surgical techniques are utilized to speed recovery and optimize results.
A multidisciplinary team approach is utilized in the evaluation and treatment of children with foot and ankle problems, drawing upon specialists in pediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, pediatrics, neurology, physical therapy and orthotics.

Clubfoot
Approximately 1 in 1,000 newborns will have a congenital clubfoot deformity. This deformity is characterized by a curled shape or twisted position of the ankle, heel, and toes. In the past, surgery was used to correct the majority of these feet. Although surgery often improves the initial appearance of the feet, there can be accompanying stiffness, weakness and occasional pain which becomes more severe and disabling after adolescence.
Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, at the University of Iowa, developed a method of clubfoot treatment that is very effective and involves minimal or no surgery. It is based on a sound understanding of the functional anatomy of the foot and biological response of muscle, ligaments and bones to gentle manipulation. In an otherwise normal child, the clubfoot deformity can be corrected in two months or less using Dr. Ponseti's method.
Recognizing the need, the Children's Clinic at Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center offers a Clubfoot Clinic dedicated to the treatment of newborns and infants with congenital clubfoot deformity. Treatment is based on weekly (or twice weekly) gentle manipulations and a series of casts to realign and properly position the bones into correct alignment. The technique takes advantage of the favorable elasticity of the tissues froming the ligaments, joint capsules, and tendons. Following correction, to prevent relapses, a splint is worn for two to three months full-time, and thereafter at night for two to three years.
