What is pediatric orthopaedics?
Pediatric orthopaedics is the study of and medical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in children. Conditions include congenital orthopaedic deformities, bone growth disorders, fractures, and joints and muscle disorders in children under the age of 18. Pediatric orthopaedists use many techniques customized to the medical treatment of children including casts, braces and splints, surgery when needed, and physical therapy. Orthopaedic care of children can differ from adults because their bones are still developing and treatment can affect the growth plates, and muscle and tendon development. - Top
What should I do if my child has a broken bone, and where can I seek treatment?
If your child has a broken bone (fracture), it is advisable to seek care as quickly as possible. Most local hospital Emergency Rooms can take X-rays and put on a temporary splint if appropriate. Within days of splinting, a permanent cast or orthopaedic treatment should be rendered to treat the fracture.
While most Emergency Rooms apply a temporary splint, parents also have the option to bring their child with a fracture directly to the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care. The Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care is unique because in addition to having an emergency medicine specialist, the Urgent Care has an ORTHOPAEDIC PHYSICIAN available to treat children's fractures.
Parents do not need a referral or authorization before bringing their child to the Urgent Care for fracture treatment.
The time of the day with the shortest wait period for parents to bring their child into the Urgent Care is between 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. The orthopaedic physician is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on a limited basis on the weekends.

Once orthopaedic treatment is rendered, the follow-up fracture care is provided by the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group at the adjacent Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center. - Top
How soon should I seek treatment if my child has a broken bone?
It is advisable to bring your child to the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care within days of a fresh fracture. If your child already has temporary splint, it is advisable to come to the Urgent Care Center for cast application or appropriate orthopaedic medical treatment.
NO REFERRAL is needed to bring your child to the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care. An emergency medicine specialist and if needed, an ORTHOPAEDIC PHYSICIAN will evaluate the injury and render appropriate care. Once the fracture is casted, follow-up visits throughout the recovery period are in the Children's Fracture Clinic in the Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center, adjacent to the Urgent Care building. - Top

NO APPOINTMENT IS NEEDED to have your child treated at the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care for initial fracture casting or orthopaedic medical treatment.
After cast application or orthopaedic medical treatment:
If your child has Managed Care Medi-Cal or private (HMO) insurance, you will need an authorization or referral to the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group.
If your child has Fee-for-Service Medi-Cal, or PPO insurance an authorization is not required.

Other than fracture care, children with orthopaedic conditions require an appointment to be evaluated by an Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group physician. Patients are seen in the Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center, adjacent to the Orthopaedic Medical Center Urgent Care.
If your child has Managed Care Medi-Cal or private (HMO) insurance, you will need an authorization or referral to the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group physicians in the Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center. If your child has Fee-for-Service Medi-Cal,

The Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group accepts Fee-for-Service Medi-Cal, Managed Care (HMO) Medi-Cal, Medicare, Group Health (HMO) and Private Pay (PPO).

The Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Group provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for children under 18 years of age. Children with congenital disorders may be seen until 21 years of age. In addition to orthopaedic care, the Group has a pediatric neurologist, pediatric urologist, pediatricians, cleft palate physicians and specialists for the treatment of adolescent and adult hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. - Top
