Orthopaedic Hospital has expanded its commitment to serving the downtown Los Angeles community. The Hospital has forged an alliance with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) resulting in the creation of the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School. Located just east of the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Center campus, the fourth LAUSD magnet high school opened in the fall of 2004, with an emphasis on healthcare and medical science. The High School serves about 850 students who demonstrate interest and scholastic achievements in science, with approximately half of the students from the local community and half from throughout Greater Los Angeles.
Representatives from Orthopaedic Hospital share their vision and are active in the LAUSD advisory committee. The Orthopaedic Hospital physicians and the UCLA physicians and scientists participate in the design of the curriculum and assist with the faculty education which includes clinical and research activities.
In addition to the school labs, the students are allowed to use facilities at Orthopaedic Hospital for certain projects and they have the opportunity to learn from the medical and research staff. Volunteer credit is also available.
The cooperative effort between LAUSD and Orthopaedic Hospital provides interested children in the school district a special opportunity through a medically enhanced curriculum, and greater exposure to the full spectrum of medical careers at Orthopaedic Hospital. The hope is for students to broaden their interest and enter into the medical and biological science careers where there are serious national shortages, and thus, attractive employment opportunities.
